Success Story – Advancing Sustainable Materials Through Nanocellulose and Biomass Innovation
The support from the Walter Ahlström Foundation has been instrumental in accelerating my doctoral research on sustainable, high-performance materials at Aalto University. With this funding, I have advanced several interconnected research directions, all aimed at transforming renewable biomaterials into functional solutions for energy, packaging, and environmental technologies.
One major achievement has been the development of ultra-light nanocellulose-based foams and multiphase structures for thermal insulation, packaging, and phase-change energy storage. These materials combine low density with exceptional thermal stability and offer a biodegradable alternative to fossil-derived foams. In parallel, I engineered cellulose-reinforced photopolymer resins for high-resolution additive manufacturing, enabling 3D-printed composites with relevance in electronics, advanced prototyping, and biomedical devices.
The Foundation’s support also enabled progress in biomass pyrolysis research, where porous carbon architectures were produced for CO₂ capture, waste valorization, and photothermal applications, further contributing to circular-economy goals.
Across these projects, the support enabled access to key materials, advanced instrumentation, and critical experimental work that together accelerated the progression of my doctoral research. These efforts have resulted in peer-reviewed publications, new industrial interactions, and the identification of clear pathways for translating bio-based material concepts toward scalable and application-ready technologies.
