Gomez Moreno Luis Arturo: Computational Intelligence for Optimising and Streamlining Li-Ion Battery Recycling Processes: 3000 eur (2025)

Hi, my name is Luis, and I am a doctoral researcher at Aalto University working on Li-ion battery recycling. My research focuses on improving recycling routes by combining process engineering with data-driven methods. Rather than fully breaking materials down into elemental form, I study process concepts that preserve material functionality while reducing energy use and environmental burden.

In our project, we have developed rapid characterisation methods for graphite and applied data-driven analysis and machine learning to process design and experimental work in battery recycling research. At Aalto, we also work with a clear understanding of Finland’s National Mineral Strategy and believe that direct recycling is an important route to achieve its goals. In line with this view, we have developed experimental work through international collaboration, focusing on high-gradient magnetic separation for the recovery of cathode materials from battery waste using WHIMS (see figure). This approach relies on mature, widely available technology and shows clear potential for industrial integration.

I am grateful to the Walter Ahlström Foundation for the personal grant support. I am glad to contribute, in my own small way, to research that advances energy-efficient recycling, strengthens material recovery, and supports both Finnish industry and long-term societal goals.
